Over 5,000 Attend Festival Kompa Zouk

Over 5,000 people attended the first annual Festival Kompa Zouk, a festival
celebrating the French Caribbean culture at Metro Hall Square on Sunday
August 1st. which started at 1:00 p.m. and ended at 10:00 p.m.

It was a perfect day for an outdoor event and people of all nationalities
showed up to enjoy the vibrant Kompa and Zouk music provided by the visiting
bands, Tempo, T-Vice and individual entertainers.  Closing the festival was
T-Vice who really had the crowd swaying to the music and enjoying every
minute of their fabulous performance.  Haitian flags were seen waving in the
breeze as many Haitians demonstrated their solidarity with this first Creole
festival which was dedicated to the Haitian people.

Remarks at the opening were by Jennyne Mayard, President of FKZO who read
letters of congratulations from the Premier, Dalton McGuinty and from
Toronto Mayor David Miller, Mayoral candidate Rocco Rossi and Dr. Eric
Pierre, Honorary Consul for Haiti.

Throughout the day people could enjoy Creole food from various vendors, who
are owners of their own restaurant.  Information booths by the Ontario Black
History Society, College Boréal and the Francophone Centre, as well as a
display of Haitian and Creole art provided other attractions for visitors to
the festival.

Jennyne Mayard, President of FKZO, said it was a dream come true and thanked
all the people for helping to make the event such a success.  She also
extended the invitation for everyone to return next year to a bigger and
better festival!
